Friday Cocktail Hour: The Enhanced Martini

4 days ago   |   By Michael Ruhlman

As the martini tends to be my drink of choice, I decided to vary my standard practice lest I grow weary of it, that standard being 2 to 3 oz gin with a capful of dry vermouth, into a frozen glass with a twist.
I looked to two great sources to switch things up a bit. First, Robert Simonson's 3-Ingredient Cocktails , in which he describes the martini as “the undisputed monarch of cocktails,” and briefly notes its long evolution from sweet and vermouthy, pre-prohibition, to the arid glass of gin with olives post-WWII. Only relatively recently has the martini found its balance. Part of that...

Friday Cocktail Hour: Amaretto Sour

Friday Cocktail Hour: Amaretto Sour

4 days ago   |   By Michael Ruhlman

It's that time- yes, another week has gone by. And with Covid's surge likely to continue through the holidays, I urge you to drink inside with your loved ones! There IS light at the end of the tunnel, but we have many weeks to go, and to pass some of the time, I am recommending this version of the Amaretto Sour, enhanced by Portland, OR, bar manager Jeffrey Morgenthaler.
The Amaretto Sour is oft-maligned for being simplistic and sweet. Moganthaler fixes this simply by adding a shot of bourbon to the drink, utterly transforming it. Yes, many drinks are transformed by a shot of bourbon (your...

Friday Cocktail Hour: The Penicillin

Friday Cocktail Hour: The Penicillin

The Penicillin (supported by my last cookbook, From Scratch )
Today's cocktail is credited to Sam Ross at NYC's Milk & Honey in the early 2000s, uses a spirit I'm not particularly fond of and one that is one of my favorites, both in the same category. Scotch whisky: one blended , one peaty single malt , and when combined with ginger-honey syrup and lemon, they make a fabulous cocktail.
To make ginger honey syrup, combine ½ cup each water and honey and a 4-inch piece of ginger thinly sliced or grated. Simmer five minutes, allow to cool and strain.
As the Penicillin has the same basic...

Friday Cocktail Hour: The White Russian

Friday Cocktail Hour: The White Russian

4 days ago   |   By Michael Ruhlman

The White Russian cocktail, vodka, Kahlúa and cream, might have been relegated to the fringes of the cocktail world had it not been for the popularity of The Big Lebowski and Jeff Bridges's enormously appealing performance as the ever-abiding Dude, aka Jeff Lebowski, a slacker and avid bowler.
According to the Wiki entry for the cocktail, The White Russian began in 1949 as a Black Russian-Kahlúa and vodka-when vodka was still largely imported from Russia and Eastern Europe and Americans mainly drank whiskey and gin. Vodka began to be produced in the U.S. only after prohibition's appeal. (...

Friday Cocktail Hour: The Alexander

Friday Cocktail Hour: The Alexander

4 days ago   |   By Michael Ruhlman

One of my wife's favorite cocktails is the Brandy Alexander, so I thought I'd make it for a Friday Cocktail Hour post. But as I was digging around on the internet, I found many references to it's precursor, The Alexander.
According to Feast magazine, this is a cocktail not invented to promote a liquor, but rather one to promote a railroad line, or rather was part of a big railroad line promotion in the first days of the 20th century. At the time, traveling by coal powered trains covered the riders with soot. One line used anthracite, a form of coal that didn't create excess soot.
The...
